July 14, 2009 - Picking Up Lori

As I have now had more than one occasion to visit our city's brand spanking new airport, I have become a serious fan of the CELL LOT....a compilation of (mostly a little wacky) people in command of various types of vehicles with a little spare time on their hands. And as I sat there waiting for 'the call' like most everyone else, I arrived at the conclusion that this place is truly quite fascinating and full of potential. It provides a revolving door of stories - brief, yet strangely unique - all coming and going at all hours of the day.

A few thoughts to begin: For instance, how great would an outdoor food vendor be? Nothing grand or elaborate - maybe one of those guys who make the State Fair circuit. The Lot cries out for some picnic tables for socializing and making new connections and introductions - after all, everyone is unemployed and networking these days! My instincts predict that it would be a welcome addition - sort of like the "Friendly Table" which MCL Cafeteria originated. The possibilities abound. There could be a chance meeting of Mr./Ms. Right (well, the area is big enough for a wedding and parking is no object) or how about packing some Lunchables and taking the kids to watch the planes land - a free way to have a little family time on a beautiful day. (A good game is guessing which airline is the next to land.) I am thinking that maybe a bathroom would be a good addition as well - nothing fancy - but definitely private. And, how about a place to walk the dog with a water station and receptacle to put the poop bags? OK, that may seem extreme, but there are tons of folks who bring "Man's Best Friend" to the Cell Lot - but more about that in a moment. Yes, this place is ripe with opportunity.
